Visit this World Heritage site, one of the most remarkable and intriguing monuments in the United Kingdom. As old as the great temples and pyramids of Egypt, Stonehenge exerts a mysterious fascination and is 64 km / 40 miles from Bath. Stonehenge is one of the major tourist attractions in this part of England, close to Bath, and regular guide buses run daily from Bath to Stonehenge. The enormous bluestones were brought all the way from South Wales by sheer manpower, a feat hard to imagine possible. The monument of Stonehenge is precisely situated to face the rising and setting of the sun and many Druids worship here. Make time to also visit the extensive prehistoric landscape nearby. The magnificent stones of Stonehenge are surrounded by many mysterious remains of ceremonial and domestic structures - some older than the monument itself and many accessible by road or footpath. Founded almost 200 years ago, Westonbirt Arboretum is one of the most popular tourist attractions 33 km / 20 miles from Bath and contains a world-class collection of trees and shrubs. There are around 20,000 specimens at the arboretum, which covers 600 acres / 243 hectares of landscaped countryside. Visitors and tourist to Westonbirt Arboretum can follow 17 miles / 27 km of trails and admire many of the impressive trees and shrubs, which provide interest throughout the year, even in winter, when the distinctive barks of the birches and maples are clearly visible. Seasonal displays include magnolias, rhododendrons, azaleas, wildflowers in the spring and some truly spectacular autumn colours from Westonbirt's countless Japanese maple specimens, which is what Westonbirt Arboretum is best known for. Other attractions include a summer gardening show, with a number of unusual, contemporary display gardens, a winter walk, with thousands of theatrical lights illuminating many of the trees, a nursery selling many plants, including Japanese maples, a gift shop, a large picnic area, a visitor centre and a restaurant area.
